Authentic Oral Communication

Image
Hi everyone! Thank you for coming back to my language blog! In my first blog post, I told you all that I would be writing a blog for each of the four strands in the Ontario Language curriculum and since I have already made three posts… you guessed it! This is my final blog post! ☹ This blog will cover oral communication as its topic of focus, but I must say I am very sad for these blogs to end. They have allowed me to reflect on critical issues and explore resources to help teach each of the four language strands, and I believe they truly helped deepen my understanding of what it means to teach language. Without further ado; however, let’s get started! The important issue in oral communication that I would like to talk about with you all today is providing authentic and engaging contexts for students to participate in speaking, and just as importantly, listening. The Ontario language curriculum states that students will listen, respond, use speaking skills and strategies in a v...

Collaborative Writing in Your Classroom

Hello readers!! Welcome back to my literacy blog where I am covering some resources or an important topic in each of the four strands in the Ontario language curriculum !! The strand I will be covering this week is writing!! Writing is an essential portion of the language curriculum and yet when I searched some resource banks provided to us, I found that resources for teaching writing were much scarcer than those for reading and even media literacy! I hope I can share my opinions on an important writing topic with you during this blog and even show you some cool resources and applications for teaching writing! The important issue that I would like to share with you all is collaborative writing and how that can be a hugely beneficial activity for you to engage in with your students. While the resources we looked at explored how collaborative writing between a teacher and their students can be impactful because the teacher can model strong writing and reviewing especially for the...

3 Great Resources for Teaching Reading

Image
Hello to all you readers! Welcome back to my language blog! Last blog post I wrote about media literacy and now this week I am excited to share with you some thoughts on reading as it relates to the Ontario language curriculum ! Without further ado, let’s get started by looking at three great resources that I believe can help you teach reading! teachingkidsnews.com The first resource that I would like to talk about that teachers can draw on to help teach reading is teachingkidsnews.com. This resource posts news articles written by real journalists on trusted websites and then adds some “think and discuss” questions for students to respond to. I think that this is a really valuable resource for teachers because the Ontario curriculum states that “it is important that [students] have many opportunities to read for a variety of purposes” (p. 10). Reading news articles addresses a purpose for reading that not many students engage in on their own , so that is where this site and r...

Media Literacy and Engaged Citizens

Hi everyone!! Thanks for coming to read my language blog! This is my first blog post and today I will share some thoughts with you about media literacy! In the weeks to come, I will also make posts about the other strands in the Ontario language curriculum : reading, writing, and oral communication! I am excited to start with media literacy because it is a strand that holds so much importance in today's world and yet is often an afterthought when compared to the more traditional strands of language. Think about this though: how often is digital media in our lives? It's around us on billboards, bus shelters, tv, phones and so much more! It's no wonder that media literacy is a critical part of the Ontario curriculum! An important issue surrounding media literacy that I would like to address in this blog post is: How can educators use media literacy as a way to create engaged and participatory citizens? The reason why I want to share my thoughts on this issue with you is t...
